How to Fight Being Homesick When Abroad

Travel Tips | Leave a Comment

As much as we all love traveling, there are those times when all you want is to be in your own bed, with your own comforts of home.  Most of the time these feelings come and go.  To ease the time of discomfort when feeling homesick and longing for your loved ones, there are numerous things you can do to put your mind somewhere else.

1: Get lost in a book.

I was never a reader until I started traveling.  It’s the perfect solution to feeling homesick, you can entirely put your mind somewhere else.

2: Force yourself to go out and meet people.

Madrid, Spain

3: Watch a familiar movie or TV show.

With plugins like Hola, you can trick your computer into thinking you’re in the US!  You can steam Netflix and many more.

4: Talk to your loved ones and be honest about how you’re feeling.

5: Do something that you enjoy doing at home.

Whether that means shopping or going on a hike, do something that feels familiar.

6: Do something to get your blood flowing and your endorphins pumping.

Maybe this means working out, or going on a walk.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

 7: Eat some comfort food.

For me there’s nothing a good burrito can’t fix.

 8: Give yourself a break.

If you know you want to lie in bed and watch movies all day then do it. Just don’t make it a habit. Tell yourself you’re going to lay in bed all day and tomorrow you will go out and make an effort.

9: Get a job.

A job will keep your mind off of missing home and focused on what’s right in front of you.  Having a job will also lead to a routine which will curb homesickness in itself.

10: Keep yourself busy, find a hobby.

Knit a scarf, write, do whatever you need to do to keep your mind busy.

Vienna, Austria
